I have just returned from a spending a week with these talented Fijian artists, currently exhibiting at the Fiji Arts Club in Suva. Curator Larry Thomas explains that kudru (a Fijian word to describe grumbling, grunting and groaning) is a title mobilized to express discontent. He writes “[g]one are the days of motifs and images signifying myths and legends, of old gods and new ones. A ‘new’ identity is beginning to emerge, one that is based on the present and not tied with the past.” (Thomas, Kudru II catalogue essay).
I will be writing more about this exhibitions and the artists in the coming months, but in the meantime, don’t miss the chance to view the new works by Mason Lee, Anare Somumu, Irami Buli, Pita Waqanui, Waqa Vuidreketi.
